Ask ten neighbors what's on in Merrillville this August and you'll get ten different answers, most of them wrong by a week. The town doesn't hand you one signature festival the way Hobart hands you the Lakefront Festival or Whiting hands you Pierogi Fest. What Merrillville has instead is a calendar that quietly organized itself around a single stretch of Broadway and one weekend on Madison Street, with the Lake County Fair borrowed from Crown Point to fill the middle.
If you plan around three nights, you've caught the month. Everything else is bonus.
The Shape Of The Month
Here is the useful version of the August calendar, ordered by date rather than by category:

Five entries. Two addresses do most of the work. That's the whole thesis of this post: Merrillville's August happens on Broadway and on Madison, and the rest is driving.
Why Thursday Night On Broadway Matters More Than It Looks
Merrillville Parks and Recreation runs its Sunset Markets at the Dean and Barbara White Community Center, 6600 Broadway, and the format is the same each session: free admission, live music, local food, and a community atmosphere from 4 to 9 p.m. on select Thursdays. On paper that reads like every summer market in the region. In practice, the August 13 edition is the one to circle.
Here's why. The June and July editions leaned on bands. Together performed on June 25 and Maggie Speaks played on July 16. The August 13 market flips the script. The Aug 13 Sunset Market is Pop-Up Karaoke, and it starts at 5 p.m. rather than the usual 6 p.m. band slot. That one-hour shift matters if you have kids or you were going to eat first. It also means the stage becomes the crowd, which changes the whole tenor of the evening.
The vendor footprint stays the same. More than 25 local vendors, food trucks, a Kid Zone, and a beer garden for guests 21 and older with valid ID anchor the market grounds. Bring lawn chairs. The Dean and Barbara White Community Center sits on Broadway a few blocks north of Southlake Mall, so it's a straight shot from most of the residential grid.
If you can only do one Thursday this month, do the 13th.
The Last Weekend Belongs To Madison Street
The Greek Fest at Saints Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 8000 Madison Street, is not a Merrillville-invented event. It is the 47th annual Merrillville Greek festival, which makes it older than a lot of the subdivisions around it. The 2026 dates are Aug 21 through Aug 23.
Two things are worth knowing before you go.
First, the pastry table is not a footnote. Sweet Bread, Tassies, Koulouria, Apple or Cherry Strudel, Galaktoboureko, Baklava, and a Pastry Sampler all get their own tent, and the sampler is the move if you can't decide. Loukoumades, which are similar to doughnut holes but coated in honey, are usually made to order and worth the line.
Second, the parking situation is the parking situation. The cathedral grounds absorb most of the lot capacity, and the surrounding streets are residential. Come early on Friday or plan for a walk from further out. Sunday afternoons tend to be the quietest window if you want to browse the bakery without a queue.
The Greek Fest is also the practical bookend of Merrillville's outdoor season. Once the last table folds Sunday night, the town's rhythm slides toward football, school schedules, and the fall market series.
The Fair Is Not In Merrillville, But It Is On Your Calendar
The Lake County Fair returns Aug. 7 through Aug. 16 as one of northwest Indiana's largest summer traditions. The fairgrounds sit at 889 South Court Street in Crown Point, which is close enough that half of Merrillville treats it as a hometown event.
Two changes this year are worth flagging.
The first is agricultural. New for 2026, a beer garden runs from 4 to 8 p.m. Aug. 8 through Aug. 16, with local beers alongside domestics such as Busch Lite, Michelob Ultra, and Bud Light. Ten years ago a fair beer garden would have been a hard sell. That it exists now is a small signal about how the fair is trying to keep its adult evening crowd on the grounds instead of leaving for restaurants after the kids' bedtime.
The second is the kickoff. The Lake County Fair Kickoff Party is Thursday, Aug. 6, with a country lineup featuring Lee Brice, Ashley Cooke, and Northwest Indiana native Dylan Raymond. That's a separately ticketed event a night before the fair officially opens, and it's the reason parking around Court Street will get thick on the 6th even though "the fair" hasn't started yet.
If you're taking kids to the midway, the middle weekdays are the play. Admission is free before 3 PM on Monday through Thursday, and the crowds thin considerably. If you're going for grandstand entertainment, the calendar leans motorsport heavy on the back half of the run.
The Quieter Half Of The Week
The two events at the front of the month are easy to miss because they don't come with vendor tents.
National Night Out is Aug. 4. It's a national program, but the Merrillville version is a neighborhood-scale evening organized by the town. Expect a police and fire presence, block-level meetups, and the kind of low-key porch traffic that only happens one night a year. If you've been meaning to introduce yourself to the family two doors down, this is the night the social friction is lowest.
The next night, Aug. 5, Movie Nights in the Park shows Goat. It's the same series that ran Zootopia 2 on July 8 and Small Foot later in the summer, so if you went to one of those, you already know the drill: blanket, snacks, mosquito repellent, and a screen that starts around dusk.
Neither event asks anything of you. That's what makes them work.
One Non-Event Worth Knowing About
Because everything above is scheduled, it's worth naming something on Broadway that isn't.
T & M International Market at 7608 Broadway is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and carries authentic African and ethnic groceries. If the Greek Fest sent you home wanting to cook something you can't find at the big-box grocers, this is a five-minute drive from the cathedral. Sunday's closed, so plan for Saturday if the fest inspired a shopping list.
That's the texture of Broadway that a "things to do" article rarely gets to. The month isn't only what has a start time.
What Happens On September 25
The last thing worth saying is what comes next, because it explains why the August Thursdays feel like the middle of something rather than the end.
The Sunset Markets series doesn't end on Aug. 13. September 24 brings DJ Pablo and DJ Louie Diaz along with a salsa lesson from Jibaro Dance Studio, all starting at 6 p.m. That's a genuinely different event from the June and July editions, and it's the reason the Merrillville Parks calendar is stretching later into fall than it used to.
If August feels like the last hurrah, September 24 is the reminder that the town's outdoor programming now runs into what used to be sweater weather.
